Jersey Mike's Subs Confirmed for Roosevelt Road

Sign in the window leaves little doubt about what's going in this building
Lovers of subs rejoice, Jersey Mike's Subs looks to be officially coming to Roosevelt Road.  While we've had readers tell us that they know this to be true, we didn't officially know.

As of Monday (2/11) the sign in the window (see picture above) removes any doubt in our mind.

We've never had Jersey Mikes.  Is it good?  In your mind where does it rank in the sandwich pecking order?  Better than Subway?  Pot Belly? ABP? Quiznos? Hanahah's Bretzel?

On a related but different topic, the area around Roosevelt/Wabash appears to have the chain sandwich market well represented.  If there is one thing we now have it's a ton of grocery and sandwich options close to Roosevelt.

(Hat tip:  DD!)

  1. I could not think of a more disgusting place for a restaurant! Under the L tracks! At one of the dirtiest, dingiest, crime-ridden L stations in all of Chicago!

I think I'll walk (or jay walk?) the extra 30 seconds to Potbelly, Jimmy Johns, or one of the two Subway restaurants.

  2. I'm sure that the Roosevelt station is not the dirtiest, dingiest, nor most crime ridden el stop in Chicago. Why even waste time writing that comment?

  4. Arrr! Internet rage! Irrelevant comments! Hulk smash!

Anyway... Jersey Mike's is good. I prefer it over Potbellys and Subway. The meat and cheese are sliced fresh as you order. It's probably better than JimmyJohns as well, but I really like JJ's bread.

Not sure how well it will do in that location, but we'll see.

  5. I wonder if they are prepared for the onslaught of lazy CTA workers and 12 bus patrons who will just take up space in their dining room all day and night asking for free water refills.

20 bucks says there is a 'No Loitering' or 'Customers Only' sign erected within the first 30 days of opening.

And to those of you who don't think there is a major criminal element at that stop, go take a look at the prison-type windows Jersey Mikes installed all along the sides of the building. FYI: that is not a standard design for any of their other locations.

  6. What better location for a fast-food sandwich shop? As long as they have their spray-paint remover ready. Nothing wrong with options. Welcome to the Sloop!

  7. Regardless of the hundreds of people who stand there waiting for a bus or contraband, this is a really ugly brick box forced onto the site. It also appears that the sidewalk is really shallow in front of this building.
The building appears to be built closer to the street than the adjacent builing... making the access on the sidewalk very limited. This is not a smart design with busses flying along that curb.
This place will probably be converted into a JJ Fish or a pawn shop by the year's end.

  8. Why is everyone so up in arms about this? Acting like they've never seen a restaurant do business under the EL. All north side neighborhoods have some sort of food establishment underneath each stop.

    ReplyDelete
  9. So does this mean they'll finally fix the sidewalk in front?

Petty crimes are higher on the Roosevelt stop due to the sheer traffic... Don't think they're worried about any robberies, seems like there's always a cop parked outside.

  10. to assume there will not be excessive loitering in and out of this establishment is beyond naive. For some reason there are those random people who refuse to believe this hub/area is nothing short of clean and crime free. Blows my mind...

    ignorance is bliss

  11. Jersey Mike's is great. the quality I've experienced is always above subway, quiznos, and even jimmy John's. plus the 2 Jmikes I usually frequent have the nicest staff ever! Great addition to the neighborhood.

  15. From the Tribune

"That Roosevelt stop, which serves the Green and Orange lines on the elevated tracks and the Red Line below, was the No. 1 station for rail crime between 2009 and June 13 of this year, according to the analysis."

I've never felt threatened there, so I'm surprised but it's true it's the worst.

  16. Joe dont cloud up the blog with facts, please....

  17. Yeah, that story was even on here last year:

    http://www.sloopin.com/2012/06/tribune-states-roosevelt-cta-station.html

    ReplyDelete
  18. Analysis in that Tribune article was slightly suspicious. Check a post we did when this came out:

    http://www.sloopin.com/2012/06/tribune-states-roosevelt-cta-station.html

Their analysis doesn't include Loop CTA stops due to limitations in the data, this was also the case for the Roosevelt Stop (but for some reason the Tribune omitted the Loop stations and not roosevelt).

  19. The CTA stop where someone was shot last year? Yeah its fine..

  20. Not sure I understand how people continue to stick up for this area as if they have something to prove....Is it the worst El stop in the city?--Probably not

Is it busy and at times unsafe and crime ridden? Yes, only a fool would argue otherwise.

  21. Jersey Mike's is superior to JJ's, Subway and Potbelly. Fresh sliced meat makes a huge difference. A manager in the burbs once told me they roast their own beef, fwiw. I am very much looking forward to this option in the hood.

    No fries, just chips.

  22. What about Coca-Cola?

  23. I've lived in the South Loop (Wabash/14th) with my wife since 2009, and I am happy with almost everything that's happened in this neighborhood since then.

Jersey Mike's opening up on Roosevelt next to the train station? Another score.

I've followed Sloopin for several years, and I've noticed that the majority of the commenters on this blog appear to be afraid to live here.

If that's the case, move. If you bought here on the cheap years ago hoping to flip your condo for a profit, oops. Deal with it.

For those others who remain, not only minorities will rob, beat or murder you. Feel free to walk around and enjoy your life.

  24. Jersey Mikes has great quality meats and cheeses. Hopefully this will help improve the patrons around this area verus another 7-11. Try the supreme club! We will frequent this place often!

  25. I think Joe and FitGuy gonna hang out together over at Jersey Mikes before heading up north on the red line to Halsted.

Good to keep the restaurant revenue in the hood I guess.

  26. anon @ 5:43 exemplifies exactly the kind of idiotic posts that give most anons a bad name. Prejudice remarks and slander should have no place on here...

  27. Will,

You realize that FitGuy and Joe are not their real names right and that they are not exactly posting their last names or photos on here so they are essentially as anonymous as anyone else right??

You must either be (1) new around here (2)some sort of pacifist or (3) one or both of those guys.

Both of those guys are trolls on here ripping on the hood and/or ripping on peoples eating habits. Either you are way niave about this or doing a good troll job yourself.

  28. ANON @ 528

Excuse me, the only "troll" here is you. Your pompous answer is nothing short of ridiculous!

I am refering to the accusation that they "take the train up north to halsted" as being slanderous...or are you a gay hater as well?

Learn to read before you accuse people of being "new" or "trolls". I've got news for you---- I have been reading this blog for a long time and I can tell you that the reactions to bloggers like fitguy are just as bad and "trollish". Some awful things have been said on here in response.........and since when is it illegal to have an opinion? "Joe" cited an excerpt from the tribune, THATS IT. Why is he labeled a troll?

Please look in the mirror before you start to cut others down, the problem starts with your own ignorance.

  30. sadly we are all OWNED... too many people yelling at each other on a blog site makes the blogs unreadable.

Talk a look in the mirror and ask yourselves if it's really worth it.

  31. "Will",

That has to be the worst series of posts ever on the interwebs.

LOL...GTFO with your false moral indignation and multiple user names (anonymous and otherwise).

So obvious it is actually entertaining.

  32. Jersey Mike's is delicious! As for the safety of the neighborhood? I've lived here since 2004 and have never had a problem.

  37. according to the Ohio st Jersey Mike's, this store is supposed to open tomorrow, 2/27/13!

  38. So excited for Jersey Mike's in this location! Their subs are so fresh and portions large that a mini is enough for me. Have to have it Mike's Way and add cherry pepper relish for that extra kick! Way better than Subway, Potbelly's or Jimmy Johns. Plus this shop is doing charity for the South Loop schools. With a coupon this week, donate $1 and get a free sub! Awesome! Will be there tomorrow! =)
