Rumors Around the Sloop: George and Angela Mitchell Building

Well it's been awhile since we've had our infamous "Rumors Around the Sloop" posts and we've had an uptick in emails, observations and discussions about random things in the neighborhood. As a result, expect some posts this week about rumors in the South Loop.

Today, we're going to start with a partial validation of a recent rumor we heard of back in December revolving around the building at 1150 S. Wabash (just North of Bongo Room). Back then we heard that the owners of Artists Cafe (412 S. Michigan) were behind the renovations at this building. While this was simply a rumor in December it appears to be true based on some of the renovations on the exterior of the building:
It's might be hard to see in the picture above, but carved into the stone says, "George and Angela Mitchell Building". So it appears that they have something to do with the renovations. However, what is still the big question? Will this be a dinner similar to the Artists Cafe? Or will it be something else?

Anyone heard anything about this?

(Hat tip: Anon!)

While at the Artists Cafe on Saturday (February 18) an employee told me that...yes, indeed, the owners of of the Artists are the owners of the new place.
She also offerd up that the restaurant will be completely different than the Artists and that they would not have waiters. Sounds like a "order at the counter" kind of a place.

Could this be a veiled description of a Five Guys?

Good, we need more of these options. I get tired of deciding which Subway it will be for lunch.

Hopefully it will be something along the lines like Howies was. Howies food was good, Howie just didn't know how to run it

howies food wasnt good--- howies food is everything that was wrong with America! We need healthier eating options and fiar prices! No more cheap, deep fried junk food.

How about a sweet tomatos? Healthy salad bar with many soup options made fresh daily.

Enough with the italian beefs and sausage joints, dont any of you lardasses care about your health?!?!

Looks too big or a counter only place. Whatever goes in there will be a vast improvement over the junk heap tat was standing there before!

Why do people only eat healthy food when they eat out? I eat healthy at home and love cooking. When I eat out, I want burgers, sausages, grease. Who wants to overpay to eat a mediocre salad? I never understand certain people.

ITS SIMPLE...

Most people eat healthy and then fatbutts like you eat sausages

I think this location has the potential to be a fantastic one of kind spot in South Loop for Student types (and us as well) if they own the lot next door and create a patio type area. Has anyone been to Wicker Park's Big Star or places like that? They are packed open to close with folks sitting on the outside tables. There is nothing like that right now (yes, you will be able to sit outside Scout, Flo, Jimmy's, etc), but nothing geared toward cheaper food and students.

"Looks too big for a counter only place." I disagree. Manny's space is very big and does great business. There really aren't any other cafeteria style options in the Sloop. I think it could work.

One of the artist cafe people told me that it would be a bistro type hip cafe on the main floor and a funky tattoo salon upstairs.

Less overhead equals lower prices.

Less overhead = more profits!!

I also heard bisto, affordable French cuisine and some sort of high-end body art salon.

Interesting concept. Not sure it will work?
