A man was found shot at a South Loop “L” station this evening, police said.Details appear to be hazy, but the victim might have been shot on a train and got off at the Roosevelt stop:
A 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound in the upper torso in the attack in the 1100 block of South State Street about 7 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
An earlier report indicated police said the victim may have been shot on an "L" train, but that information came from one person who identified himself as a witness but declined to be identified, and the information could not be verified with police.Once we read more we will update this post.

I was coming out of Jewel and saw a bunch of detectives looking for evidence in the parking lot. I saw a new truck, so you know we'll be getting some good publicity!
Just now watching the tv news coverage...wounded person was flashing "gang" signs AS HE WAS BEING WHEELED TO THE AMBULANCE!!!
This is just too much for me...I am saddened that this type of activity is happening in this neighborhood.
How is this a shock to anyone?
Have you ever been on a train or bus that stopped at Roosevelt? Wonder why there is a CPD blue light camera on that corner?
Here is the video which shows the victim being taken into the ambulance. He appears to be flicking off and yelling at the cameraman.

This is it for me I will tell the Bank they can have the keys to my place tomorrow I'm out fellas good luck.
This is not the only reason why I am leaving this is just one more drop of water in my already full glass I'm out.
Later
i didn't see guy flashing gang sign while being wheeled to ambulance
I think it was MarkChicago that voiced his displeasure over this L Stop ?? I seem to remember alot of idiots telling him he was being irrational and racist
This is a simple instance of people choosing to act like animals and not like civilized people in a modern society.
More cops Rahm.....stop sticking it the burbs with their water bills and address the #1 problem in your city
Another case of over inflated pentions hindering Chicago's need for more Police Officers
Great job dems
There's been gang violence in this city for a hundred years. Gang tagging? Think that's something new? In fact there's way less graffiti in the city today compared to the 70s-80s.
And Chicago Ave. isn't in the Loop.
Obviously you do not know what "gang taggings" look like, because there aren't any around there. There is a difference between graffiti consisting of tag names/graffiti crews and gang graffiti, which I have not even seen any of in this area. I am very familiar with it myself as I actually grew up in the city.
And Steven, do you really think there isn't enough cops in the South Loop? Come on.. The police station is only a few blocks away from the Roosevelt station and they maintain a heavy presence in that area.
So what is the problem? The police do not do their jobs. They target the wrong people. I'm a mixed minority and I get the "look" from the police just casually walking around the neighborhood, carrying groceries home from Jewel. I witness a bunch of shady stuff all the time, and that is when there are no police officers in sight.
We need a new police department, one with police officers who actually know the streets, people who grew up in this city and actually know what is going on.
the L is a train system that connects the entire city of Chicago...
How does an event that happened on one of the L's busiest hubs represent the neighborhood?
This is going to happen from time to time; sorry to shock you with this reality.
to mark, steven, brendan...
Your consistently hateful and racist remarks are making this planet a LESS peaceful place. You are not making anything better with your limited insight. Your comments on this and other threads are no better than the senseless crimes we hear about on a daily basis.
stop acting like 5-year old kids
without getting political or racial (none of it is really necessary IMHO), I'd suggest folks here read the take on this at secondcitycop.blogspot.com
Multiple comments report that throngs of yutes were wilding all afternoon around Water Tower Place, and the Roosevelt El Stop shooting involved a group of about 30 of those kids that were pushed onto the trains on the north side. The wildings up north have been going on a lot longer than a few days, and its just a circumstance that the shooting was on Roosevelt rather than anywhere further north or south. Rahm and the superintendent both deny there is any problem.
This is why we don't need anymore L stops in the Sloop. Rift Raft/gangs don't need to be here. I could care less about transportation. Safety first!!!
Why is it Rahm's fault now? This is what's wrong with our society. We gear up and blame others when we should be asking for personal responsibility. If they're old enough to ride the L, then they're old enough to not act like animals. Before you blame the police, the mayor, or anyone else, blame the parents first.
My girlfriend was a witness to the events that led up to this. She got on the L at the Chicago stop and saw a huge group of kids yelling at each other inside the station. Meanwhile there were several CPD there that did nothing to intervein. The kids all got on the same train as her and started sticking their heads out and yelling at some others on different cars. When they arrived at Roosevelt, she heard a scuffle at the platform and turned around in the escelator to she a group of thugs pouncing on one kid. She got out of there PDQ and called 911. apparently the shooting happened after she entered my building. (I want home when this all went down)
Seems to me the CPD could have prevented this...
without getting political or racial (none of it is really necessary IMHO), I'd suggest folks here read the take on this at secondcitycop.blogspot.com
But isn't that site extremely political and racial?
I don't blame Rahm but this is a public saftey concern.....when a chicago citizens are running around in mobs attacking people on the streets/at CTA hubs at an increasing rate.....I dont expect a statement from their mothers. I expect a statement from the law. Rahm and superintendant need to step it up and figure out a plan.
The pention system has handcuffed this city to a point now where they cannot add the nessasary amount of patrol officers it needs to properly combat this behavior.
If the kids were running around throwing eggs at cars then yes, I would blame the parents. This is murder-- I want the law involved.
Can't wait until that new green line stop opens at 18th! Then, these guys can flee into my garage when they are running from bullets. Oh joy!
Racial Tension is very high in the SL, but there is no room for bigotry. Also, agree this was coincidence that the guy got shot at Roosevelt and there is NO gang activity AT ALL in the South Loop and proud to say we have the least graffiti in the city (except for Streeterville). Every other neighborhood, other than Streeterville has far more issues daily (Uptown, West Loop, West Town, Wicker Park, Bucktown -yes bucktown, Loop, West Lincoln Park, Lakeview and north parts of River North).

Save your speech for someone else. Alot of us grew up in the city, big deal. I pay alot of money in my property taxes to municipalities and expect there to be better protection up and down one of the main CTA L hubs in the city.
Its clear that your intentions in you last post are just to advertise to the world that you hate cops because you feel they look at you funny because youre a "mixed minority" . Grow up
I'm not a racist, I'm a husband and parent of two young kids. My wife and I take our kids to day care in the Loop on the CTA three days a week. I'd like to be able to do that without herds of unsupervised thugs spewing profanity and spraying bullets at each other on their way back to englewood. Is that too much to ask?
And for those of you who shrug off this GANG SHOOTING ON THE PLATFORM OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD'S TRANSPORTATION CENTER as a reality of city life and want to tell me to "move to the burbs" if I can't handle it: you need to reassess your beliefs and priorities.
I think the cops do need to take some more blame from time to time. As mentioned above, this happened right down the street from one of the biggest CPD stations in the city.
I use the Harrison stop almost daily and almost always see cops down there, at least around rush hour periods. Where were the cops at Roosevelt, a much larger stop, at 7pm? Where were the cops up near Chicago Ave. if it was true there were big crowds of unruly kids yelling at each other or "wilding" as some one claimed?
The cops in this town are almost only seen inside their cars. I mean except for at SRO restaurant, and on bikes and Segways on nice summer days in the park. Yes, I think some blame deserves to go towards the cops.
Not blaming everything on the cops, but they do always seem to get a free blanket pass as brave American heroes and the knee-jerk blame goes to some politician. I think we need more cops walking and riding the streets on bikes and fewer driving in cars catching traffic law violations.
And someone who has read enough and done research to conclude that "pentions" have handcuffed the police department should know that it is spelled "pensions."
yeah...because the police can be everywhere, right? We need MORE cops...and I see them out in full force many times in our neighborhood on foot.
Just like a liberal, always lookin to blame someone else, and not the person in charge.
Rahm "the untouchable"
How in the world is it "liberal" to blame the person in charge and not someone else? I'm pretty sure every single republican in America has been blaming "the person in charge" (Obama) for every little thing that goes wrong in the world. Boy are you "out of touch with reality."
So the cops are never to blame? How many more cops will make the city crime free?
There has always been gang violence in this city. It used to be more spread all over. I lived as a kid up in Bowmanville in the 70s, just west of Ravenswood. There was graffiti and gang activity all over. Andersonville was really scummy and dangerous. Lakeview and Lincoln Park were a nightmare. I'm not making this stuff up. You need to take some history into perspective. Hell, the 1920s saw outright war in the streets, machine guns and murders all over the place. People think of Al Capone days in some cute, romanticized old-timey way, but people lived in fear and anger over that violence just like today, just like in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.
I'm not making light of this. I'm just saying to have some perspective. Large urban areas have always bred violence. Go back 200, 400 years ago and look at London. Violence and misery everywhere.
Some kid shoots another kid on a CTA platform and Rahm Emanuel is personally to blame?
I'm not a racist, I'm a husband and parent of two young kids. My wife and I take our kids to day care in the Loop on the CTA three days a week. I'd like to be able to do that without herds of unsupervised thugs spewing profanity and spraying bullets at each other on their way back to englewood. Is that too much to ask?
You said it!
It's a sad reality that we are going to have to live with, that that L stop is always going to be a problem. It's never going away.
And yes besides hacing the worlds best chili SRO is the safest place in the sloop
Steven...
I do not hate cops, and I never said I did. I just made a statement that they target the wrong people on a regular basis, which they do, and you might not be aware of it.
I'm a Marine Corps Veteran (not to advertise this either, just making a point) and my first day back to Chicago from bootcamp years ago, I was harassed by cops for no reason as I was waiting for a friend in front of a store which happened to be a liquor store as well; the cops slammed me against their car, threatened to lock me up saying I was waiting for someone to purchase liquor for me as I was underage.... How do you think I felt? This is just one instance, this stuff happens all the time....I still get harassed by cops, usually non-verbally meaning they slow down next to me as I'm walking through the neighborhood at night and just stare at me. But whatever, I've learned to deal with it as I am I have "grown up."
Back on topic, I just read that the kids responsible for this shooting have been locked up and charged as juveniles, age 14 and 16. So as we have seen over and over again, they will be released eventually then back out to the streets causing more trouble, unfortunately.
Another note, I spoke with one of the witnesses after the shooting and he told me the police were actually already present at the lower-level of the Roosevelt station when the shooting took place. They had already been called due to unruly teenagers at the station.
Along the lines of what 12:38 is saying, a police officer was shot to death on the Roosevelt St. platform in the 1920s or so.
Go to the Northwestern homicide database and search by street, and you'll see shocking numbers of murders on the same blocks in the near south side going back to the 1880.
Still, I agree with the concern expressed here, both with the police and with the politicians and with the parents and with the idiot kids doing this. They are either responsible for this behavior (kids, parents) or for doing something to stop it (police, politicians).
Rahm wanted the Job - he is accountable for every aspect for public safety. When politicians exchange votes during their lifetime of service for more policies that usher in many of these "free stuff lack of personal accountability" social behaviors that help keep people enslaved to the government dole, they need to be held accountable.
The police, and many good residents in those same neighborhoods, suffer to the cruel fate and see the viscousness of this violence (just look at the story of the kid who was thrown in a trunk and set on fire in Mexico), hand have their hands tied by the PC politicians. Many of these kids walk on serious charges because of political interference (direct or latent) in the attorney's office and many other departments.
Any sign of 'alleged abuse' has the Alderman and Pov-Pimps giving away the store with unfounded lawsuit settlements. The cops have no ability to throw in a beating or two to make kids like this think twice.
Just look at the background of most of our Alderman and local State Reps. Most have made their $$ as Tort specialists suing the city and state for millions. You have other Alderman & Reps with more concern for expanding immigration rights for non-documented citizens, than for the delivery of services to Chicago citizens, while ignoring the facts that the unmonitored expansion of illegal immigration activities is impacting the crime and graft in many Chicago neighborhoods.
There should be an investigation how CTA security cops let 30+ hooting kids even get on the train in the first place. The stuff that is allowed their is disturbing. You try this in places like London, and you will be quickly escorted out of the station immediately.
So you're telling me there was little or no street crime in the days before "PC politicians"?
You're aware Burge was convicted of torturing people from '72 through '91. There was a ton of street crime back then. What about the '20s? Was the problem PC politicians? Or was it cops on the take? Was there a problem with PC politicians in the '50s, '60s and '70s? Did public hangings and police brutality stop all the crime back in the 1800s? How about the middle ages?
In your perspective, was there ever a golden period where everything was law and order, only to be ruined by PC politicians?
And your statement:
"Just look at the background of most of our Alderman and local State Reps. Most have made their $$ as Tort specialists suing the city and state for millions. You have other Alderman & Reps with more concern for expanding immigration rights for non-documented citizens, than for the delivery of services to Chicago citizens, while ignoring the facts that the unmonitored expansion of illegal immigration activities is impacting the crime and graft in many Chicago neighborhoods."
Do you have any numbers or facts to back any of that up? Or are you just throwing a tantrum?
The problems that lead to shootings like this are systemic problems. No number of extra cops or crackdown on teens is going to change the situation. You want to fix it? Address the roots of urban poverty. Make meaningful policies that create stronger schools. Throw the time and resources into fixing "broken" neighborhoods instead.
These problems are not easy to fix, and they require a big picture approach that recognizes the interconnected social and economic factors that contribute to them. So either dig out the entangled roots of these incredibly messy problems or go huff about how everyone should just be able to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, hire a few extra cops and wonder why nothing changes.
How about we all agree that violence is bad? Let's be realistic --identifying the perpetrators is not racist. This our neighborhood and we should protect it. Perhaps we can find a way to put some of our money and energy into improving the area if the city can't do it. Besides paying for security guards (which I like), any ideas?
A sample for you.

Keep trying to "untangle those roots". I'd rather have cops at the platforms protecting passengers
Good lord I am glad some of the dopes on here arent in the position to make formal decisions for the city.
agreed anon @ 9:39
In the past week I've heard of the shooting on Roosevelt(Red/Green/Orange), a beating/theft at Harrison (Red), a man fondling a 17 year old girl at knife point (Blue), and numerous people being robbed at gun point (Green). The common theme is that all of these trains run through poor areas and all of the suspects are black men. As a result there needs to be a greater police presence at stations and on trains that connect these poor areas to more well of portions of the city.
