In Search of a Clothing/Donation Drop-off in the Sloop

A reader writes:

Hi Sloopy,

Question for you and/or Sloopin readers: Anyone know of a place in the
area to drop-off or donate old/used clothes? I know there's a GoodWill
in the West Loop, but I'd prefer not to drive that far and support local businesses/charities instead.

Many thanks,

MG.
It's a good question. We had a similar one a couple of years ago, but didn't really find much. Does anyone know about a old/used clothes drop-off in the Sloop (or close)?

If not, maybe we could organize something with a local business?

(Hat tip: MG!)

  1. The Pacific Garden Mission on Canal. I have dropped off everything from clothes, food, to very used up electronics and pretty much anything else.

  3. The Pacific Garden Mission is a neighborhood shelter that is always looking for donated clothing, food and financial gifts. A couple of years ago, they moved to 1458 S. Canal Street to make room for the Jones College Prep expansion.

Below is info from their website on donating used clothing and there is someone there from 7 AM to 8 PM to help with receiving the donations:

Used, clean clothing in good condition is always welcome. In addition, there is an ongoing need for new clothing such as socks, shirts, undergarments, large-size panty hose, sweaters, jackets, gloves, mittens, toiletries, grooming aids, as well as clothing and toys for children. There is always a special need for men's underwear. All donations of clothing must be dropped off, or shipped to: Pacific Garden Mission, 1458 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL 60607. Thank you for your generosity!

  5. There is a USAgain bin by the United Storage at 407 E 25th St, which is just south of McCormick Place. They are a local company that sells the worn out clothes to recyclers and better clothes to thrift stores. Its for profit and not in the same vein as Goodwill but at least its creating local jobs and its a great place to take old worn out clothes. My guess is that Goodwill just throws that in the garbage.

  6. Not sloop, but close enough, try Unique Thrift Store, 3000 South Halsted Street.

  7. Grace's Place (gracechicago.org) at 637 South Dearborn has some kind of food pantry/donation drop-off center. I donated food items there last winter. The website doesn't mention much about it, but I'm sure you can call the church to find out more. I went on a Saturday late morning for my drop-off and there were people there. Might be fine to just stop in. Hope this helps somewhat!

  8. The Pacific Garden Mission over on Canal takes pretty much anything.

  9. Pacific Garden Mission. If you pull up on the North side of the building (14th ST?) the security guards will help you unload your donations. If you want a receipt for tax purposes, step inside and fill out a form.

  10. Catholic Charities near north Dearborn/Wells & Superior. They take most items, will provide tax letter.

The also serve as a clearing house for many other Charities, funneling items to orgazations like Pacific Garden, and others.

And, to be honest, it is just not the same hassle I have received dropping stuff off at Pacific Garden.

  11. Check out Bridge to Success's store called The Bottom Line at 1236 S Halstead. They have donation days and are a great charity helping people get back on their feet. http://www.thebridgetosuccess.org/ (Disclaimer - I have volunteered for them before!) :)

  12. I also recommend Pacific Garden Mission. Before dropping off any clothes in drop-boxes, check this out first:

  15. I'm afraid of the reaction that this may cause, but the absolute last place I would donate anything to is the Pacific Garden Mission. For the last 20 years or so, there have been very, very few (perhaps zero)aggravated criminal sexual assaults by predators/strangers in the loop/south loop that were NOT committed by someone or other listing their address at Pacific Garden. I noticed this pattern in the '90s, and its been confirmed every time there is an assault of this nature somewhere near downtown.

It might be a broad brush I'm using, but that is the last place I'd want to support anywhere in my neighborhood. Sorry for the tone guys!

  16. There is a drop off at Canal & Roosevelt inside the Staples parking lot.

  17. I agree about Pacific Garden. You should donate those clothes to battered women shelters.

I find it odd to clothe many of the same people who are vagrants and sexual predators. Look around at the "animals" that loom around here and I would bet that at least over half come from Pacific Garden Mission. Would rather donate the clothes to a thousand other charities.

  18. Thanks for the Staples drop-off suggestion. Prefer that option to a Christian ministry.
