  1. Hell yes!!! This should finally shut up to all the critics of the south loop on this blog that paint our wonderful neighborhood as lower class and a playground for vagrants. We live by public transportation and are a major artery of the city so expect some level of elements near a train. We do live in an upper class community and the amenities we have reflect that. We all just need to be patient and more retail will follow.

  2. Yeah!!!!! Great news.

  3. Will the #12 bus stop there?

  4. Well, there goes my ONLY reason for keeping a car around, now that TJ's is within walking distance.

  5. Alderman Fioretti is doing a great job in the face of the economy. Re-elect Bob! Remember Fioretti in February.

  6. For those that keep wanting to see gentrification behind every store front and dry cleaner: no one said that this is a playground for vagrants. The neighborhood is overpriced, and it is following a very corporate line of development, one that produces sterile neighborhoods without much depth, a playground for the 50-something crowd. The credit crisis had been helpful in maintaining a level of diversity, and I find that encouraging.

Let's hope that Trader Joes does a fine business, but that the neighborhood isn't just another mirror reflection of the area North of the river.

  8. Hey anon nay sayer. A TON of people have made numerous comments that the south loop is a playground for vagrants. should you refer back to the high level of chicken bone comments and the racist comments about those who wait by the Roosevelt bus and train. I am pumped that a Trader Joes is coming in and am very proud for the area. If you think the area is so overpriced and generic why do you live here and check a blog about an area you criticize? The economy sucks so most places as close to the loop as we are are not going to attract small businesses. Just enjoy the traders joe and lets not complain about the south loop when the south loop actually attracts a really cool business.

  9. #12 bus stops in front of the Columbian on Roosevelt (which is next to the Trader Joe's building). The #12 bus stop under the el goes back east to the Central Station or 16th/Michigan area.

  10. GOOD NEWS! What is so great about Trader Joe's? It's not the second coming and Chicken bones will still be littered about the ground. Now, if Sam's came back that would be the second coming....

What is with the remark a (anonymous 11.25 @ 3:48PM) "playground for the 50-something crowd" If it was not for the 50 something's money...you would not be living here... Someday you might be a 50 something. It's not all about the 20-30 somethings!

  11. Three cheers for Trader Joe's! It's always great to discover fun little nuggets like the TJ business license on EveryBlock. Thanks for spreading the word, Sloopin.

Does anyone know when they're planning to open? Based on my experience with another nearby TJ, they can be a little secretive when it comes to details.

  12. No suprise here, Trader Joe's has been tallying up the 60605 zip codes at their other stores and have finally justified that a sloop business will do well.

BTW, the sloop is a mixed bag of vagrants, uber-rich, students, young families (planning a suburban relocation), hip old people & kool baby boomers, overwalked dog owners, Chinese people that don't like living in Chinatown, Section 8 recoverers, non-racist whites, liberals, the occasional redneck & the crazy guy riding his bike that yells at everyone. We do pretty well here don't you think?

  13. What did the Alderman do in connection with this? Would be interested to hear since I have never heard him talk about this.

  14. I concur with the last comment re; the Alderman. Why in the world would I thank my Alderman for a chain grocery store opening? Rather, I'd love for my Alderman to tell me why my property taxes increased by 20 percent this year while my assessed property value dropped by 30 percent. Yeah, thanks Bob!

  15. I'm in shock ...do you think they have been trolling the Chicago blogs since SAMs left?

  16. @Anon 850 AM: Sam's is never coming back. It was bought out by Binny's corp and all Sam's were turned into Binny's stores. There is no point in having 2 Binny's stores within 1/2 mile of each other off of Roosevelt.

OK sloopers, a lot of dreams about to come true. Now, don't drive another business away by not patronizing it.

  17. To the 2nd Ward Democratic Organization joker. What the heck are you talking about? Seems the Alderman finally learned how to get of the way. How about you get back to work on the fixing the gosh darn parks. Why is it that all the Park money is being spent in the West Loop, and while the parks in the South Loop look like poohy.

  18. Also, if this answers your "dreams" for this neighborhood, please don't ever run for public office.

  19. Ugh, can't we be civil here? It's kind of disturbing that even a positive development for the neighborhood brings out so many people trying to tear down their neighbors and presumably their neighborhood.

  20. IF this is true, why is the management company still advertising 17,000 square feet of available space @ that location?

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is fantastic news!

  22. Fiorette just sent out a neighborhood update, and the Trader Joe's news was in there. Maybe the leasing company forgot the sign was in the window.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm sure taking a sign down isn't their top priority, and even if someone did call to inquire about the space, they could show them some other space in the area. It's true. It was even in the Alderman's email yesterday.

  24. Anyone know what commercial tenant is building-out the space at 1400 S. Michigan? Permit is on window and there are sighs of first movement in the commercial space in that building in YEARS.
