Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) is reconsidering his plans to run for mayor because of what sources close to him are describing as a "health concern," the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.Fioretti will announce his intentions for the Feb. 22 municipal general election "no later than Wednesday," when the full City Council meets after Tuesday's statewide election, a source close to the alderman said."He will be seeking elected office," the source said of Fioretti - an indication that if Fioretti doesn't continue his campaign for mayor, he will seek re-election to his aldermanic seat. Under city election law, Fioretti cannot run for both offices.
To be honest, this doesn't come as a surprise to us. In our opinion, it's unlikely that Fioretti could actually become Mayor. Was his campaign a opportunity to get his name in the newspaper? potentially, but regardless you can't fault a guy for having higher aspirations. Maybe he's planting a seed for a future run. Who knows...
Regardless, he's done a pretty good job in our opinion and we would be happy to see him try to defend his current 2nd ward Alderman spot. We will see.
Umm--suggesting locations in the South Loop for riverboat gambling in Chicago is _not_ what I'd consider looking out for the interests of those of us living here.
ReplyDeleteThe Alderman didn't say he wanted a casino..he said we need to explore ALL options to bring revenue back into the city. He has been a phenomenal Alderman...and I am happy to have it serve in that role for another term.
ReplyDeleteTo say he has been a phenomenal alderman is completely subjective. I disagree and think it is time for a change. I have visited his office on multiple times over the course of 2 years for the same reason, the dangers of the intersection and pedestrian walkway at Congress and Plymouth. They have not done a thing and I still see and hear vehicle crashes at this intersection weekly, not to mention the female pedestrian I saw struck by a vehicle here last year. In my opinion, in order to be a "phenonmenal" alderman, you must listen to your constituancy and make changes to things that allow eminent danger to those constituants. If you don't protect the safety of your citizens, what do you do for them?
ReplyDeleteA good job? Let's hold our public servants to some higher standards please. Alderman Fioretti does a lot of high contact, people- pleasing type of events (town hall "yes your voice is heard" ) that garner good will and quality photo-ops, but net very little substance. I am not impressed with him.
ReplyDeleteA judge even referred to Bob Fioretti's own testimony in a court of law as a "smokescreen" and "unbelievable". I will side with the judge.
“The judge scolded Fioretti in the ruling, calling one of the alderman’s answers on the stand “nonsensical” and noting what he termed the alderman’s “spotty” memory.” http://www.chicagojournal.com/news/09-30-2009/Congress_scores_in_permit_suit
I have found the same experiences when dealing with him - selective memory when it suits him.
The second ward is a financial mess. I don't want anyone this shady as my alderman or as my mayor. He is no reformer.
Also, he sketches me out. don't wear a tight sweater when you meet with him. And what's with his unnamed companion who is a zillion years younger? Is she his kept woman? Whoever she is I feel bad for her.
Fioretti has been a good alderman, but even the option of a casino in the south loop is criminal. South Side or even the unused East bldg may be ok, but we need real long-term solutions not only in IL, but in the United States. The tollway in 70's was a 'short-term' solution - guess what.
ReplyDeleteCurious if anyone complaining about Alderman Fioretti, lived in the here when Madeline Haithcock was Alderman.
ReplyDeleteFioretti is leaps and bounds better than her.
I love our standards for politicians. We will accept anyone better than Haithcock. How sad! Casinos, parking meters, sychophantistry. Sigh. No wonder the South Loop is such a "little Las Vegas" (not in a good way).
ReplyDelete"A judge even referred to Bob Fioretti's own testimony in a court of law as a "smokescreen" and "unbelievable". I will side with the judge."
ReplyDeleteYea, he bent the rules to try to bargain away that blight of a labor strike. Right thing to do imo, but keep on hatin...
I SMELL ANOTHER DEAD FISH....
ReplyDeleteRahm and thugs have been very busy this past week..
First Tom Dart and now BOB!
The whole thing smells fishy!
The alderman definitely spoke in favor of a casino. It sounded like he "wanted" a casino in this article. http://waww.suntimes.com/news/metro/2733272,mccormick-place-casino-fioretti-092110.article
ReplyDeleteTerrible idea. The social costs of casinos are well documented.
Amysue Mertens took a critical look at Fioretti in the Chicago Journal - http://www.chicagojournal.com/News/09-29-2010/The_devil_is_in_the_details
ReplyDelete"Also, he sketches me out. don't wear a tight sweater when you meet with him..."
ReplyDeleteThis is what Philanderetti does, when he's not lying to constituents, taking money from corrupt sources, or making himself look good in the media that is.
