Desperate Dogs?

We've never heard about this problem, but if it's true something needs to be done. Has anyone else noticed this? A concerned reader writes:
I am writing to report an abusive animal report that is occurring in the South Loop. There is a man that has as many as 9 dogs chained up outside in the large field directly south of the Roosevelt Collection. East of the river and west of Clark st. I have called the police over 4 times and nothing has happened. I frequently walk my own dog back there and several times heard the dogs moaning and barking. He has a little shack set up there and the dogs appear to be underfed and in poor condition. I thought that maybe bring awareness to the situation through your website would bring about some action.

Here is the map of the exact location. On those concrete foundations.

  3. How do you get to that field? But anyway, don't call the police. Their useless. Call the humane society or animal control. They will definitely send someone out to check out the situation and hopefully rescue the dogs.

  6. Animal Control might be a "disaster" but they were great while we were being evacuated Saturday. I was sitting out on Wells Street with my cat in a carrier, trying to figure out where to go, and two separate animal control officers approached to ask if I needed food or water for her. Thumbs up.

Call Animal Control. They're equipped to handle situations just like this, and will escalate it to police if necessary.

  7. I've been over there before and have heard several dogs barking. I could not tell if they were loose so I got the hell out of there. You can access the field through the fence at the end of Wells (under Roosevelt).

  8. For what it's worth, I sent an email to the anticruelty society. This needs to be dealt with.

  10. I think if we did a flash mob South Loop style with a bunch of food and water we could bust these dogs out of there and chain up the owner. See how he likes 98 degrees with no shade, food, or water.

  11. As of August 2nd those dogs are still out there. Does anyone have any ideas on how to escalate this? The other day those dogs were tied up there during that major thunderstorm. Anyone have the contact info for the land owners?

  13. Anyone who has seen with their own eyes where these dogs are and what is going on please e-mail Mark Rosenthal at the following e-mail:
    mark.rosenthal@cityofchicago.org

I received his permission to post his e-mail. I contacted Animal Control after reading the blog and he got back to me quickly. He has gone out to the site and saw two dogs in a tent, but not tied up. I can only tell him what I have read, but he could really use assistance from those who have witnessed the hardships of these dogs. Please take the time to contact him directly! Thanks!

  14. I have seen these dogs and seen the people who are "taking care" of them. There are 2 large pit bull looking dogs which had puppies earlier in the year. When they first had the puppies I saw approximately 5-7 dogs total but recently there seems to only be the 2 adult dogs and 2 puppies. I walk my dog at the park near 18th and Wentworth every day and see these people and dogs frequently. One of the dogs is very aggressive, I have seen the people hit the dogs and pull them by their ears and none of the dogs seem to be receiving the care they deserve. I have seen the people walk the dogs over the train tracks north into the field where they are being kept illegally. Animal control needs to go out there and rescue these animals. I just emailed Mark Rosenthal.

  15. Yes, this is very true I live at RC and have ran into this individual. He had warned me about his dogs that where just ahead.

Have reported twice to no action would like to know status of situation?

  16. The person I see from time to time walking the dogs is a black male in late teens/early 20's who seems to often be dressed head to toe in red (maybe a vice lord?) I saw him walking four dogs this weekend.

  19. Just was out at the park at the corner of Clark and 18th. A police Van and Tahoe came rolling in and drove to the edge of th train tracks. They got out of their cars looking for a path back there. Apparently they want to go get the now (3) pitt bulls but dont know how to get the back there. They gave up after 10 mins.

Tip to Police: Take S. Wells SOUTH Until it dead ends under the Roosevelt Rd. Bridge. Continue on directly SOUTH using the dirt road that the construction crews have been using the Last 3 months to the Ping Tom Park Expansion. Listen for dying Pitt bulls 500 yds up the dirt rd on the right on top of a concrete embankment.

  20. Here's what Mark Rosenthal said. I don't think he relaizes that this is a safety issue as people walk around back there and some gangbanger has dogs chained up.

    From mark...
Animal Care & Control and the Chicago Police were out to the site of the dogs.
At the time we observed 3 animals, all were in good condition. Citations were issued to the owner.
