Southgate Market at 1101 S Canal Street (home to Whole Foods, World Market, Panera, DSW, etc.) lost Linens N' Things and Office Depot simultaneously last year, but it appears that one of those vacant spaces will be getting a new tenant soon. A reader sent us a picture saying that Marshall's will be moving into the complex.
We recently drove by and noticed some construction on the ground floor where Linens N' Things used to be. For those who aren't familiar with Marshall's here is a quick history lesson via Wikipedia:
Marshalls traces its history to 1956, when Alfred Marshall gathered a band of innovative entrepreneurs on the East Coast who included Bernard Ribas, Norman Barren, and Frank Estey to collectively start up the "Brand Names For Less" concept. Contemplating the dual postwar phenomena of a boom in the economy and growth in the suburbs, Marshall and associates came upon a way to meet it profitably. Together, they opened a self-service department store in Boston, Massachusetts, offering apparel and homewares at alluringly low prices.
Obviously the store has evolved and actually is now owned by the TJ Maxx corporation.

Here are my ideas for the closed Office Depot store in the Southgate Market:

3. CVS
4. Divide it into two spaces for these type of stores:
a)Bath and Body Works
b)the Body Shop
c)a bank
(5/3 Bank since you have their ATM machines)
d) mom/pop businesses
(bakery; shoe repair shop)
Don't forget Trader Joes on that list.

Kohl's needs to go in Roosevelt Collection. I think they might eventually at the rate they're expanding, but something in this area would be a good location for them, since their nearest store to the Loop is up in Bucktown, and they don't really have a store in the south part of the city.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I would love to have a Trader Joe's, there is no way one is opening in Southgate Market. I'm sure Whole Foods has a clause in their lease that prevents any other sort of grocery store from opening there.
ReplyDeleteso glad a clothing store is coming in! i had been hoping for that for a long time! it's such a great shopping center and a clothing store was the one thing missing. it's difficult for me to run errands and shop in the city since i have a baby now, and this will certainly help out since we frequent whole foods and petsmart.
ReplyDeleteMarshalls will bring an interesting crowd... But these stores are doing well in a down economy. High end food store meets, bargain clothes!!! A true sign of the times!!!!

ReplyDeleteUgh, the Marshall's in Lakeview has a run-down K-Mart vibe, but worse as all non-clothing items are just heaped on shelves around the perimeter of the store. This may be a welcomed edition to the owners of Southgate but it's just going to be nasty.
ReplyDeleteThis store, like the rest of the southgate market (sans whole foods) will be an utter dump. LA Fitness is pure ghetto. The DSW looks like a flea market. The parking lot is unkempt (the stop sign leading onto Roosevelt out of the lot was stolen about 6 months ago and was never replaced).

I didn't realize my wonderful South Loop neighborhood was so full of ignorant close-minded fucks. You must be the most miserable people in the world, living in a city with socioeconomic and racial diversity, which you clearly detest. It's really quite pathetic.
And again, Sloopin, I wish your blog wasn't constantly being polluted by all this negativity about our neighborhood. I enjoy living here and I like discussing neighborhood issues. Just not these ones, because to me, they are not issues. Just the close-minded agenda of some asshole with a çomputer.
To me, Marshall's is a perfect fit for this big-box corridor. It certainly makes more sense than the neighborhood-consuming location in Lakeview. I don't really consider this part of any neighborhood anyway (is Woodfield a neighborhood?), so as long as it's doing well and has popular big-box stores, I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteI think Anon @ July 1, 2010 7:40 AM is just being negative for negativity's sake. Is there seriously anything uniquely "flea market-esque" about this DSW? It's a warehouse, sure, and one at which I've never been able to find anything, but there's certainly demand for that business model.
And what was uniquely "unkempt" about the parking lot? I can't really think of a parking lot that I would classify as "kempt." Did you call the city or the Southgate about the missing sign?
Do you not know what 'unkempt' means? This parking "situation" is clearly dis-sheveled. Spot markers out-of-whack; parking assistants on their phone rather than on the job; stop signs missings; overhead signs in disarray; broken-up, over-flowing garbage cans. This property will attract low-end retail, at best.

What's going on with the space(s) that Office Depot had and the one next to DSW?
ReplyDeleteNow they need to do something with the shut down Office Depot store and the property next to DSW. How about Khols? This location only need a shoe department for children. Teens and adults can go to DSW and the new Marshall store for shoes. Or don't sell household items (the Marshall store will carry those items). Just sell clothes and shoes.

Also in the South Loop area, put a Dollar Tree Store where Linen-n-Things on Roosevelt/Ashland Avenue used to be. To go to a Dollar Tree Store in the area, you need to go Cermak and Rockwell (across the street from Pete's Fresh Market), Cermak and Ciecro Avenue, or on Elston Avenue (across the street from Target). I don't want to see another temporary Halloween/Christmas/Easter Store.

It's officially open! I went to the grand opening day of Marshalls in the south gate today. It's huge and filled with tons of shoes! I'm happy to see new shops coming in, regardless of what they are.
