Why Can't We Get 4th Meal?

A good friend of the blog recently emailed us wondering what was going on with the Taco Bell on Congress. As veteran Sloopers would remember it was supposedly being renovated, but appears to have stalled:
Do you have any info on why the Subway/Taco Bell on Dearborn and Congress has
yet to re-open? Signs on the door have said that they are re-opening under
new management soon, but these signs have been there for a few years now.
It looked like they started doing renovations but they halted. I haven't
been past there for a bit so it may be open now. If not, I think this a
job for Sloopin'!

It's a great question and something we haven't heard much about. Any insight?

I can't imagine either of these reopening, but especially the Subway since there is now one a block north on Plymouth and a block south on Clark.

There's a realtor's sign on the front . . . looks like the entire building is up for sale.

I believe the building is in foreclosure.

There is another Taco Bell located in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

There used to be one at Clark and Lake.

Seems like the economic (real estate) downturn is the culprit . . . or you could just blame the graffiti.

Honestly, I just figured they put a Taco Bell Express in the Columbia super dorm or something.

BTW - I heard there was also a Taco Bell in Parma, Ohio.

There's a Taco Bell in Iceland too! But because of the ash cloud, it's hard to get to, so we should really have one in the sloop.

We already have two Dunkin Donuts and two Subways in the Sloop (actually three Dunkins if you count the one on south clark, near Polk) - can we please NOT have a Taco Bell as well!

If we are going to get any more chains, my vote is for a Starbucks anywhere south of Roosevelt. I cannot believe that there are no Starbucks between Roosevelt (1200 south) and 35th and State! That's 33 blocks! Even the most obscure neighborhoods on the north side have at least 4 or 5 Starbucks. We get one at Roosevelt that is way too small and poorly operated (it's an outpost in the Jewel parking lot!).

With Starbucks closing hundreds more stores nationally this year, I'd not expect them to open any South Loop locations anytime soon.

Which is fine by me considering how terrible their coffee is.

I could go for Chic-fil-a in that location.

Yes! Downtown Chicago needs a Chick-fil-a! But having waffle fries and delicious chicken sandwiches so close would be dangerous.
