anyone who voted "not in favor" is not for prosperity in the south loop. You ass clowns need to realize that the less commercial vacant space in the south loop the better the area will be perceived as a whole
I think we needed another Subway like we needed another empty hole in the ground in this neighborhood. Clearly, most feel the same way as only 5% of those polled were "happy" about the "addition" to the neighborhood.
We now have at least three Subways and at least three Dunkin Donuts in the Sloop. Great! Also bad is the fact that our 'non-chain options' are going from bad to worse. Has anyone tried the food at Grace O'Malley's lately? Terrible! Same for Zapatista. And don't get me started on 'exposure/utopia/now open/grand opening'! I guess in light of these poor options, Subway isn't too bad!
Richard: I agree. If we must be bombarded with fast food chains, Subway is a good one.
Yeah clearly your not getting it. Sure a subway isn't a sexy addition but it takes up one of our many; too many vacant commercial spaces.
Also, this is 24hrs subway. This is very very rare. The first in Chicago, and the only others are in NYC, LA, DC, Tokyo. Lets be proud of that at the least. The sloop is void of many late night eateries.
Got in from the west coast at 3:00am after a long flight delay, and I have to say I was tempted to pick up a sandwich at the 24 hour Subway! I was too tired though. I was also thinking it would have been nice to have a Peet's or a non-chain coffee shop in that corner--would be a nice alternative to Starbucks, and frankly, I'm happy to walk to Wabash for my Subway fix.
A Peet's coffee would be perfect! That is my first stop each time I'm in San Francisco for business. ANY starbucks-type alternative in the sloop would be great (Argo, Peet's, Caribou, etc.) Also, if we must have another fast food chain open up in one of the many, many, many vacant storefronts along motor row, my vote is for an einstein bros. bagles! Great for breakfast and lunch!!!
By the way, I stopped in at the Subway on Wabash, and one of the men working behind the counter said that both the Wabash and Michigan stores are owned by the same person. It sounded like the Wabash location might be closed, but I couldn't tell for sure because of the language barrier (or maybe my hearing, which isn't the best!)

ReplyDeleteThat's actually one of the nicer looking Subways downtown... Looks good to me.
ReplyDeleteAlong with 13/Wabash and State/Cullerton, this makes 3 Subways in the south-south loop (between Roos. & Cermak).
ReplyDeleteBut if we're going to get inundated with fast food franchise restaurants, we can do a lot worse than Subway!*
* though I secretly yearn for a Taco Bell.

anybody want to take up a collection for an in'n'out?
ReplyDeleteI just don't get it, ANY occupied space is better than a vacant storefront! These businesses create jobs and contribute to the tax base.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to like the product to appreciate that it adds value to the area.
Got a better idea? Nut up or shut up.
Better idea = not Subway. Plain and simple. If I want a Subway meal; I can handle walking the extra 1/10 of a mile to 13th and Wabash.
